World of Tanks partners with the WWE for the strangest crossover event we’ve ever seen.

There’s not a lot of wrestling happening these days thanks to COVID-19. Tapings only recently restarted in April, and the big shows that would normally sell out stadiums are currently only happening in barely populated studios.

WWE is still hoping to host the SummerSlam in Boston later in August, but with COVID-19 cases surging across the US, I wouldn’t hold your breath on that one.

Instead, the WWE is turning to video games to keep their brand alive. And one of those video games appears to be World of Tanks. For some reason.

On the surface, you wouldn’t think there’d be a lot of crossover between tanks and wrestling. And indeed, there isn’t, except for the possibility that some World of Tanks fans are also wrestling fans. Where this Venn Diagram meets, you get the WWE SummerSlam tie-in.

Coming along with update 5.0 is this WWE-inspired crossover event that brings big-name wrestlers like The Undertaker, Becky Lynch, Andre the Giant, Sgt. Slaughter and 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin. Each are given their own special tank that you can purchase and drive around. They even made a special trailer that makes it look like you're wrestling with tanks.

But don't wrestle with tanks. They're not made to wrestle.

Everyone gets Stone Cold's M48 Patton for free, while the rest will have to be earned/purchased. There are also crew chests that contain each of the aforementioned wrestlers as well as emblems, Gold, and free XP. Each wrestler comes with one or more skills, and a chance to award a premium tank.

The event runs from now until September 21, with a roster of five new wrestlers arriving in August. Those wrestlers include Roman Reigns, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, Ric Flair, and Shawn Michaels.

In addition to the inexplicable wrestling theme, update 5.0 brings cross-play between PS4 and Xbox One, which should help to improve matchmaking times. There will also be updates to old maps, a brand new map, and the return of the RTS-inspired Commander Mode.
