World of Warcraft: Dragonflight brings with it an entirely revamped Profession system, which includes an incredibly useful feature called Crafting Orders. This new structured system allows for unqualified players to reach out to those trained in a certain skill or specialization, and submit recipes that they would like to have crafted.

Like the Auction House, Crafting Orders is presented in a tiered system, with items being categorized by rarity types and value. If you're in need of a piece of equipment, you'll have to browse for a recipe, and then submit a request. The receiving crafter will then have the choice whether to follow up with the commission, or pass it up for another project. And this is, in brief, only one of the elements in the Dragonflight expansion.

Crafting Orders

The idea is relatively simple: any player who lacks the knowledge, skill tree, or tools to create something will have the chance to pay another player to build it for them. These are called commissions, and it is entirely up to the experienced player to decide whether they would like to progress with the build, or leave it for another player to pick up.

You can request an order for an item in one of two ways: in person, with one of the local players who know the recipe that you're looking to fulfill, or through a NPC, who will present you with an interface that is highly reminiscent of the Auction House. Here, you will be able to submit your recipe, at which point the receiving crafter will be able to browse the available jobs and complete it for an agreed sum of gold.

If you're on the ordering end, and would like to make the recipe slightly easier for the trained crafter, then you can submit any of the reagents that you have already obtained.

By doing this, you can make the cost of the commission significantly cheaper. The crafter, who will go on to complete the piece, will then add the missing parts, and take the agreed sum of gold on completion.

The finished piece of gear will then be sent to the recipient via mail, at which point the deal will be signed, sealed, and delivered.

The one who crafts the gear from the Crafting Orders interface will have to sacrifice a small sum of gold to the Artisan's Consortium.

Crafting Tables

The Dragon Isles houses a number of zones to pot around in, with one of them being something of a hub for the crafting community.

The zone in question is Valdrakken, the latest centerpiece to the World of Warcraft continent. It is here where you will be able to experiment with new crafting recipes, as well as meet fellow crafters to swap tips on recipes.

The available Crafting Tables in Valdrakken will also give fresh-faced players the opportunity to establish a network of talented crafters, who can, at some point in the future, build recipes that would not usually have the reagents needed to be created.

Crafting Specialization

In Dragonflight, each player will wield the power to craft items from the reagents they acquire around the Dragon Isles.

Like other Specializations, crafting more equipment will net users points, which can be allocated to a secondary skill tree that will help broaden the knowledge in any one particular crafting area. For example, if a Blacksmith allocates points to their chosen skill tree, then they will go on to become Armorsmiths, which will, in turn, allow them to craft better armor.

Of course, there are a number of alternative methods for leveling up your crafting talents in Dragonflight, and they aren't restricted to just building gear at random, either. Thanks to the update, you can evolve in your craft, and develop new skills by exploring the Dragon Isles and acquiring fragments of knowledge.

For example, an old scroll may contain secrets to building better items, or an old peddler may possess the recipe to a piece of epic gear. The point is, exploring the locale and scrubbing it of all its nooks and crannies could very well give budding crafters a little extra information on rarer gear.

Secondary Crafting Stats

Alongside your newly revamped crafting skill, Dragonflight also opens up the doorway to secondary crafting skills.

These secondary skills allow you to channel your knowledge into unique tiers, all of which can be highly beneficial for both your own gear, and other low-level players' gear, too. There are four secondary tiers in total: Inspiration, Resourcefulness, Crafting Speed, and Multicraft. These stats are only applied when crafting Dragonflight items.

  • Inspiration: Increases your chance of crafting items with a higher quality.
  • Resourcefulness: Increases your chance of crafting items with fewer reagents.
  • Crafting Speed: Boosts your productivity when crafting an item.
  • Multicraft: Increases your chance of crafting more of the same item, providing they're stackable.

Item Quality

Items that can be crafted in Dragonflight will come under one of five quality tiers: Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3, Tier 4, and Tier 5.

As with any item that bears a quality marker, the higher the tier, the more powerful the item will be once crafted. An example here would be a health potion, in the fact that a higher quality potion would ultimately lead to greater side effects.

As you progress deeper into Dragonflight, and allocate your specialization points to one of the secondary crafting trees, your ability to craft better gear will become second nature. The more time you spend building up your crafting skill, the higher the payouts you will receive for completing commissions.

Recrafting Items

As you build up your crafting skills and experiment with its secondary branches, you will learn to craft equipment with a much higher quality.

If this is the case, and you have already built a low-level quality item, then you will be able to apply your newfound knowledge into recrafting said item to make it better. You can either do this alone with the skills you have already developed, or through the Crafting Order system, in which another player will upgrade the item for you.

You can, of course, recraft already-crafted items by using a portion of the reagents you originally used to create it. Again, this can be done with the reagents out of your own pocket, or through a commission, which another player can pick up for a set amount of gold.

Soulbound Items

Fortunately, the Dragon Isles doesn't keep that much of a leash on soulbound items, which means you can submit a commission through the Crafting Orders interface for one, and not have to worry about being unable to equip it on completion.

In most instances outside the Dragonflight expansion, any item that is branded with the "Bind on Pickup" marking wouldn't be transferrable. This is, at least through the Crafting Orders section, now completely doable.

When it comes to hiring another player to craft your item for you, you must be aware that they will need to meet the necessary criteria to be able to craft it. You do not need to have any involvement in the profession to be able to submit the commission via the Crafting Orders section.

How To Prepare For Dragonflight

WoW Dragonflight

The doorway to the Dragon Isles launches on November 28, 2022, at which point the crafting trainers will become available for recipes, scrolls, inks, and various Dragon Isles reagents. Before you go plunging into the network of islands, it's definitely worth taking stock of any stackable reagents in your current inventory.

If you can keep a set amount of items aside in preparation for the Dragon Isles, then you should have the tools needed to get a head start in the profession. Also, it's a good idea to accumulate as much gold as you can before embarking on the quest to conquer the Isles, as gold will help you acquire higher quality gear in the Crafting Orders section once it becomes available.
