World of Warcraft has been a cornerstone of the gaming world for many years, and in a world that changes at the press of a button, that's a very long time. For good or ill, these days WoW is a permanent fixture in the pop culture landscape and has both a retail and Classic version to accommodate two generations of players.

Both the old and new incarnations of WoW have a few things in common, and even those who have never played the game will understand jokes about the ecstasy of getting the highest roll versus the agony of a crushing wipe. No matter which World of Warcraft you're playing, there are a few relatable things every player does.

7 Forgetting To Update Spell And Ability Ranks

All abilities and spells in Warcraft have different levels or ranks, and if your character changes their spec or is experimenting with different types of talent point builds, the ranks of these abilities and spells often change. The result is that you end up casting less powerful spells. To fix this, it might be as easy as putting another icon on the right hotkey or as difficult as speaking to a trainer. It's a hassle in PvE gameplay and just plain embarrassing in dungeons and raids.

A problem that afflicts maxed-out characters most of the time, it's also an issue when leveling and can make an already tough grind even worse. It's a much bigger problem in Classic, where the talent system is completely different.

6 Running Out Of Bag Space

The severity of some quirks will vary depending on what version of the game you're playing, but the truth is that anyone that plays RPGs can testify to this. One of the smartest things Blizzard ever did to improve game security was to offer free bag spaces in exchange for signing up for the authenticator. Nobody would turn that offer down.

Players gush about their first green items or that sparkly new mount, but there are few quest rewards or purchases that get more love than extra bag space. This is very closely related to another shared experience that MMOs in general and WoW specifically are known for.

5 Being Broke

There's a reason that there are a million guides on how to make gold in WoW, and it also explains why the whole concept of gold farmers exists. You need money in this game, and the characters that need it most are always lowbies with fewer venues for making it.

This is a running joke in Classic when making enough gold for a mount was an epic endeavor and you didn't even get it until level 40, but the legacy lives on in every version of WoW. Training, repairs, and certain essential accessories still cost money, and depending on the class, level, and primary profession, there's not a lot to spare.

4 Leveling A Warrior

Such an easy, straightforward class but also one that's fun to play. More immersive than a one-button-attack Mage and without the messy and sometimes cumbersome mana-related abilities of Shamans or Druids, so what's not to love about Warriors?

In a word, leveling, and you don't find that out until the grind is well underway. This is a class that's gear dependent and has few self-healing abilities outside of combat, and for Protection spec Warriors who do relatively less damage, it's even slower going. If your Warrior is an alt, you can send them some extra gold, gear, and heirlooms to streamline the process, but it's painful as a main character.

3 Just For The Mount

Some players grind a certain class or profession with one main goal in mind, that sweet rare mount. It's not just Warlocks and Dreadsteeds anymore, either, which was a running joke in older versions of WoW for literally years.

Today it's also Engineers hoping for that badass Mechano-hog or Tailors who want a magic carpet. In the case of the motorbike, you can ride one if you're not able to build your own, but be prepared to pay about 20,000 gold for it, and what did we say about always being broke?

2 Neglecting Secondary Professions

Another MMO, and another fishing minigame, so you can't blame people for skipping their Cooking, Fishing, and in the case of Classic, First Aid skills. However, once you hit that endgame, raid leaders and guild leaders start to ask about consumes and bandages.

It's not just important items for maxed-out players, either. The secondary professions are attached to Achievements, like the Salty Title for fisherfolk or the Chef for Master Cooks. It's also nice to offer your fellow raiders and dungeon crawlers a hearty feast before getting started.

1 Guild Drama

The environments of home, work, and game all have something in common at last. Whether it's over gear, raid composition, or some jealousy over an RP session gone wrong, where there's a guild, there are going to be disagreements, fights, and even theft. Be careful who gets the guild bank permissions.

Imagine getting 40 people together for a 3-hour raid session, and you know what herding cats is like. There's a reason that guilds fall apart, change leadership, or break up on what seems like an endless cycle, and that reason is drama.
