Saber Interactive has released patch 1.16 in conjunction with the World War Z – GOTY Edition, bringing new characters, a new DLC map, and several quality of life improvements to balance out the game and correct some unintended bugs.

The new content comes in the form of the Marseille Episode DLC, featuring three levels to fight through in the French city, its own story, and four additional characters to choose from. The Last Aid weapon skin pack DLC is also being added and features some great looking new cosmetics. Both new content additions are included in the GOTY edition and automatically available for Season Pass Owners. Otherwise, each can be purchased individually.

Players who currently own the standard edition of the game can upgrade at any time, and receive all updates automatically. Considering that the standard edition of the game was given away as part of Epic Games’ free weekly titles, the overall cost of acquiring the GOTY edition is quite reasonable for those who picked it up at no cost about a month ago.

In addition to new content, there are several improvements that have been made to the game. For starters, the Classic Bullpup Rifle and all its variants are now available at all levels for all players. Second, Zombies can no longer pull players down when they are standing above the pyramid. This might seem like a minor change, but it was by far one of the most frustrating unintended problems the game faced when it would occur.

The update has arrived right on time with its planned May 5 release date and comes with an unfortunately large download size that for some reason differs greatly between PC and console. On console, players need just shy of 20GB of space, whereas the PC download is only around 10GB.

This makes us wonder how large the game will end up being in its GOTY edition when it finally releases for the Nintendo Switch. The challenges associated with having hundreds of Zombies spawn at once in a four-player game online are already massive for the console. Now, it seems that players will also need to ensure they have the storage space necessary for what looks to be a massive download.

In any case, we certainly cannot wait to see how World War Z runs on the Nintendo Switch. For now, we have the French city of Marseille to explore, and hopefully, survive.
