Following the continued success of World of Warcraft: Classic, players are still facing long wait times to log in to certain servers, and Blizzard is responding by once again offering free character transfers from highly-populated servers. However, players need to move fast if they would like to take them up on the offer.

Blizzard states that the moves should be requested as soon as possible. As a result, one may be able to get this free transfer for another few weeks, or the offer could expire by the middle of next week.

The long wait times to log into some realms is certainly frustrating for affected players, but it does point to something positive. With fixes like this, Classic appears to be more than simply a passing fad that players came to try out before going back to other games. Of course, there are tourists stopping in to try Classic, either out of curiosity, or like this writer, to enjoy the old game for a while before realizing that it is too much to budget a “new” MMO along with all of the other games being released this year.

Although queue times have gone down on most servers, especially after the first rounds of free character transfers, realms like Herod and Kromcrush remain busy all of the time. Players who choose to take the free ride elsewhere will end up on Felstriker, Earthfury, Heartseeker, Anathema, Arcanite Reaper, Deviate Delight, and Windseeker. A complete list of destinations based on realm of origin can be seen here.

Blizzard has stated that there will be a brief window to make the move, and that September 23 is the earliest that this may end, so players should act as soon as possible if they would like to move. However, many players are skeptical as to whether the move is a good idea for them, or if they should continue to hold out. While it seems clear that Classic is doing quite well and is a hit among players, those who transfer may find themselves in ghost towns if later the realms see a drop off in players.

On the other hand, holding out for a few more weeks or months on the busier servers may be the better idea for those who want to ensure they are on servers with a healthy population of players in the long term. While these initial moves are free, moving back later if the population numbers change would require the purchase of a transfer.

This is less of a concern for players who wish to explore the content individually, since they can be on any server to accomplish that. But given that finding groups for dungeons and raids in Classic is a far more social event than in the retail version of the game, it is a consideration to be had before making a decision.
