With the release of World of Warcraft: Classic, many players may be wondering what makes the Human race a good choice above all others in creating their characters. Like all races, there is a certain amount of lore that one may enjoy having as part of their character's backstory, while others may enjoy having access to a specific type of mount, racial abilities, and of course, access to a specific class.

Humans, alongside Orcs, were the first playable races in the original Warcraft: Orcs & Humans. As such, they have some of the most detailed lore as the conflict between the two has been at the core of many chapters in the World of Warcraft universe.

Lore

During the First War, the Humans of Stormwind barely survived the initial invasion by the Orcs after surprising everyone with their arrival through the Dark Portal. In the Second War, during the events of Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, we saw the creation of what is today considered the Alliance. Together with new allies, the Orcs were pushed out of Azeroth, and driven all the way back to the Dark Portal.

There, some of the Alliance, largely led by Humans, chased the Orcs through the Dark Portal in the events of Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal, and seen in the WoW universe in the first expansion, the Burning Crusade. Despite being victorious, the Humans would again face adversity.

The arrival of the Burning Legion, of which events can be seen in Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. Shortly after the fall of Lorderon thanks to Prince Arthas, we came upon the events at the beginning of World of Warcraft: Classic. Humans maintain their alliance with Night Elves, Dwarves, and Gnomes, and are vigilant against the growing power within the Horde.

Racials

All classes have their perks when it comes to passive and active abilities. Humans have access to the following:

  • Diplomacy — Gain a 10% bonus to any faction point gains.
  • Mace Specialization — Increases your skill with one-hand and two-hand Maces by 5.
  • Perception — This increases stealth detection for 20 seconds, with a cooldown of 3 minutes.
  • Sword Specialization — Increases your skill with one-hand and two-hand Swords by 5.
  • The Human Spirit — Increases your Spirit by 5%.

At first, Diplomacy may seem like a useless passive bonus, however when one is working towards attaining an Exalted reputation with some of the factions in the game, that 10% bonus can translate to a significant amount of work avoided.

The Human Spirit has often meant that Priests be rolled as Humans for the bonus offered to their mana regeneration, since running out of mana in a dungeon can spell certain doom for the party.

Available Classes

In World of Warcraft: Classic, the selection of races per class is more limited. Here, Humans can select the following classes, with some benefits afforded to them with the points from above:

  • Mage — Human Mages are a popular choice, likely because many people like the look of this race. However, in terms of min/maxing a character, Gnomes are a far better choice due to their bonuses. Still, we see plenty of Human mages all around the game.
  • Paladin — Humans are a great choice for both Retribution and Protection Paladins thanks to their Mace and Sword Specialization. This allows for them to hit more reliably and maintain either damage or aggro on their target.
  • Priest — As stated above, Human Priests have access to more spirit, and thus more mana regeneration to provide more healing or DPS. Some prefer Dwarves, but they have a different set of racial abilities that while useful, are perhaps not as good as Humans.
  • Rogue —Human Rogues can be great choices for Sword builds thanks to their specialization. However, for PvP, they are not as well equipped as other classes, and thus should only be chosen for their aesthetic value.
  • Warlock — Again, none of the racial benefit Human Warlocks, and since other races can benefit from their racial. This is another aesthetic choice.
  • Warrior — Human Warriors are fantastic as both DPS and Tanks thanks to their similar tactical use of both Mace and Sword Specialization. They are worse than other options on the Alliance for PvP, however.

Racial Mount

This is the opinion of this writer alone, but the Horses are among the most boring mounts offered to any class in the game. Certainly others may feel the same about the Dwarven or Gnome racial mount, so this is subjective to each individual. The six mounts that can be purchased are:

  • Brown Horse Bridle — 80 gold, 72 with reputation discount
  • Chestnut Mare Bridle — 80 gold, 72 with reputation discount
  • Pinto Bridle— 80 gold, 72 with reputation discount
  • Swift Brown Steed— 1000 gold, 900 with reputation discount
  • Swift Palomino — 1000 gold, 900 with reputation discount
  • Swift White Steed — 1000 gold, 900 with reputation discount

In the end, it is often best to choose a favorite race, since only the absolute top players in the world need to worry about maximizing every possible detail of their race and class combinations. With that said, be prepared to see many humans while playing!
