Revealed a little over a week ago during Realms Deep 2021, publisher 3D Realms has announced that its upcoming retro shooter Wrath: Aeon of Ruin will not be released until 2022. Previously scheduled for a summer 2021 release, the main reason for this delay has to do with the COVID-19 pandemic. In making the transition to work from home, the small team developing Wrath had trouble accommodating everyone. That's to be expected considering the distance with which we all live from each other.

That certainly stings, but 3D Realms doesn't want to continue to leave fans in the dark. Instead of the radio silence we've had for the past half-year, the publisher is committing to bi-weekly updates so that fans can keep up to date on Wrath's development. The updates may not always be substantial (the post even mentions that some will be, "Fixed an enemy bug, changed the lighting on X map, etc), but they will be regular so as to not scare fans into thinking Wrath has been canceled.

Another reason 3D Realms has decided on this delay is to prevent the team from crunching while making Wrath: Aeon of Ruin. With so many great titles coming out each week, there is no reason to rush development on what is already a rather fantastic retro FPS. If more time is needed to polish the rough edges and finish up the remaining episodes, then that is absolutely better than crunching people to death.

There's no release schedule as of yet aside from the nebulous 2022. We also don't know what is going on with the console ports of Wrath, but 3D Realms will be talking more in the coming weeks. We'll just need to remain patient while the team figures out how to work around its current predicament.
