Wyvern Riding is one of the big new features that is coming with Monster Hunter Rise, and it will allow you to literally mount the giant creatures you’re fighting against, and start either slamming them into walls or head-on into other enemies.

The new feature replaces the mounting you could perform in Monster Hunter World, although in that game is was often seen as ineffective and time consuming, with most online parties preferring to just hack and slash away at a beast’s ankles. Here, Wyvern Riding gives you the ability to control the monster, in addition to potentially dealing a lot more damage.

We will detail everything you need to know about Wyvern Riding in this guide, so you can prepare to mount and punish all of the creatures you come up against in MHR.

How To Begin Wyvern Riding

Wyvern Riding requires a handful of things to put in place before you can jump on top of a monster.

First, you’ll need reins in order to wrangle your mount, and those reins are made up of threads from either the Wirebug or the Puppet Spider, which you can find crawling around somewhere in the map.

You can either use your Wirebug-enabled Switch Skills (Hold ZL, press X) in order to attack your enemy, which also laces them with thread, or use a Puppet Spider from your inventory. This will prep them.

Once that is done you’ll be able to mount the monster once it is downed and in a vulnerable position. This worked for me most reliably when two monsters were in combat with one another - which actually happens fairly regularly. Use your Switch Skills as often as you can in this situation, and you’re almost guaranteed to have the opportunity to mount a monster to begin Wyvern Riding.

How To Control A Monster During Wyvern Riding

This is the most important tip for controlling a monster during Wyvern Riding: hold R to move. Sounds simple, but this is very easy to overlook in the heat of battle.

You will be able to use Fast and Heavy attacks by literally controlling your monster during Wyvern Riding, in addition to a quick dodge, and the ability to slam them into walls. This is best used to make one monster attack another. You’re ensured to inflict damage to both monsters, your Wyvern Riding timer will increase allowing you to continue your assault, and you will likely break pieces off of one or both of the monsters, ensuring you have materials to collect once the fight is over.

You will also have a dodge move, which you should use to escape attacks from the other monster you’re fighting. As you can tell, these mechanics are adapted to have you make one monster fight another more effectively, and often one of the monsters involved will not count towards your mission. Regardless, it’s still worth Wyvern Riding to inflict damage and collect materials.

Finally, once you’ve built up enough energy by riding you’ll be able to use a Mounted Punisher by pressing X+A. This deals huge damage to the monster, and will then dismount you, where the regular fight can continue.

All in all, Wyvern Riding is a very worthwhile tactic in any fight where two monsters are present, whether you’re online or solo. Definitely give this one a shot in Monster Hunter Rise.
