Xbox and Seagate have unveiled 512GB and 2TB storage expansion cards to go alongside the 1TB cards already available.

Almost one year on from the launch of Xbox and PlayStation's next-gen consoles and the only major complaint about either has been that there aren't enough of them to go around. The only other real concern has been storage. The games available on both consoles obviously look and play better than most games to have come before them, which also means they take up a lot more space on consoles.

The expansion options for both consoles were limited at launch, but both PlayStation and Xbox have improved on that since. A 1TB Seagate storage expansion card has been available for the Series X|S for a while, and now Xbox has revealed its next-gen console owners will soon have even more options if they are already running out of room for their games.

512GB and 2TB versions of Seagate's storage expansion cards have now been revealed. The former was expected as its imminent arrival was leaked earlier this year. However, the 2TB option has come somewhat out of the blue and will be a welcome product to those of you looking to add a significant chunk of storage to your Series X|S.

Extra storage comes at a price, though. Seagate's 2TB option will cost $400 and be available in the US from December. The 512GB version is a lot more affordable at $140 and launches in mid-November. No word yet from Xbox on when the storage expansion cards will be available outside of the US. Wherever you live, this is good news for Series S owners, in particular, as the console has incredibly limited storage. Even if you have one pretty big game installed there isn't much for anything else.

PlayStation enabled the ability for PS5 owners to bulk up their console storage earlier this year, rolling out a system software update activating the ability to install additional SSD storage. Prior to that, PS5 games could be stored on a USB device connected to the console but could not be played unless they were stored on the PS5 itself. The same applies to Series X games stored on an external USB device.
