With the coronavirus lockdown situation keeping most people at home, you'd think an all-access game service like Xbox Game Pass would be raking in the money hand over fist. While we can't say for certain how well the subscription service is doing, some recent comments from Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg (general manager of Xbox game marketing) have painted a negative picture.

Speaking to What's Good Games, Greenberg said, "With Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft is focusing on over-delivering on value, even if it comes at the cost of profits in the short term." He followed this up by reassuring Xbox fans that the company is doing okay. Microsoft isn't going under and those with an active subscription don't need to worry about the service getting shuttered.

"The most powerful marketing is word-of-mouth marketing," Greenberg stated. "We can't create as many advertisements, as many assets as we want, but if both of you go tell one of your closest friends, 'You have to get Game Pass!' that's way more effective than any marketing I can do."

For Microsoft, the idea with Game Pass is to increase the perceived value of the Xbox brand to gamers. If more people begin to believe Game Pass is worth it, more will sign-up. I've been singing the praises of the service for months now, so I do truly believe it is worth subscribing too.

Still, it's understandable that many would be wary given Microsoft's track record. The company famously tried to launch a DRM-box with the Xbox One back in 2013 and that perception has followed it to this day. The company has since gone on to do some very pro-consumer things with not only Game Pass, but its backward compatibility service.

I won't sit here and try to sell you on Game Pass, however. If you don't feel the need to sign-up or only have access to Nintendo and Sony's ecosystems, it isn't the smartest investment. If you have no console allegiance and are even thinking of getting into PC gaming, then Game Pass is 100% worth the cost. Microsoft is also gearing up to put its studios to good use through the service, so that's even more reason to get in on the ground floor.
