Microsoft is hitting Sony where it hurts with a controller that’s compatible both forwards and backward.
Yesterday, we found out that the DualShock controller from the PS4 would not work on newer PS5 games. According to Sony, PS5 games will need the updated features and capabilities of the DualSense controller and just won’t work on the older PS4 controller. You’ll likely get one controller with a new PS5, but multiplayer games will likely require that owners shell out for a few more DualSenses.
But you know who won't need to buy a whole bunch of new controllers? Xbox owners. Because the Xbox Series X will be 100% compatible with the old Xbox One controllers.
The official Xbox Twitter account responded to the PS5 news with a tweet reaffirming that "Xbox Series X is compatible with ALL Xbox One controllers across ALL games." This includes all official Xbox One and Xbox Elite controllers, the Xbox Adaptive Controller, and third-party controllers and headsets.
Not only that, but the Xbox Series X controller will also be compatible with the Xbox One, too. So if you buy an Xbox Series X but want to use the XSX controller on your Xbox One, you can do that.
Oh, and you can also use the Xbox Series X controller on PC, Android, iOS, and Project xCloud too. Take THAT, Sony!
The Xbox Series X controller looks to be the best peripheral to come out of Microsoft yet. It uses many of the premium features pioneered on the Xbox Elite controller, such as the "faceted dish" D-pad and rounder bumpers and triggers, but still uses regular AA batteries for power. This can apparently be replaced by a separate charging pack, so long as you have a cord that will convert between USB-C on the controller and USB-A on the console itself.
Now, we’re not saying you should base your decision on what console to back solely on its peripheral compatibility, but this is definitely another point to Microsoft in the upcoming console war.
