Had it not been for the urging of Bill Gates himself, the Xbox project might never have gotten off the ground. He had worked closely with the Sega Dreamcast team and loved everything about their system. Over time, he developed a great fondness for video games and had contemplated bringing Microsoft into the fray. Though he milled around about the idea, it wasn't until some enterprising Microsoft engineers presented the company with a prototype that he became fully invested. Despite the negative feedback given by the higher-ups in the company, he insisted that they go ahead with the project. When it was announced, many felt that Microsoft might fall flat due to its lack of experience in the area, but to their credit, they were able to hold their own.

As the years continued to roll on a rivalry developed between Microsoft and Sony over who would control the market. They became so focused on each other that they forgot about Nintendo, who would outshine both the Xbox 360 and PS3 in sales by the end of it. After admitting this oversight, both companies focused all their energy on creating a next-generation console that would be unlike anything else on the market at that time. There eventual cost and closeness to computers made many wonder what the next gaming consoles might look like. No matter which console you support, each has its advantages and disadvantages. With that being said, it's time to take a look at some custom reworks of the Xbox One.

29 Dope: Calling To A Classic

If you want to talk about a game that has evolved drastically over the years, Fallout is certainly it. While some may have been a bit disappointed by some elements of Fallout 4, for the most part, it delivered.

With Fallout 76, Bethesda showed that they were willing to adapt once again.

Only time will tell how good the game really is, but it's certain that the future is bright for the franchise. They've added an element that was necessary for growth and been able to bring new players to the franchise at the same time. The immense popularity of the game has spawned many great console mods over the years and this one is certainly among them.

28 Lame: A Little Bit Much

Without gold, we wouldn't have the super small and efficient electronics we use every day. A little bit of the precious yellow medal go a long way and its conductivity and anti-corrosive properties help to ensure that our electronics run at peak efficiency for a very long time.

While we certainly wouldn't have the things we do today without it, I don't think that many would be clamoring to get their hands on an Xbox One made out, apart from the fact that it has monetary value. This is another case of just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

27 Dope: Thinking Of Ironman

Via: edsjunk.net

Coming up with an original idea is never easy to do, even when you have a ton of source material that you can draw from. You might have a good idea of what you want to create, but you end up backtracking a bit when you realize that it is something that many have done before.

Granted, creating something that is similar to others is not always a bad thing, but I think we all strive to create things that are not only unique, but that express our own ideas within them. Sometimes an artist will take an element from an iconic character and create something unlike anything anyone expected. That's precisely what happened with this rendition using Tony Stark's arc reactor.

While there are many things in the field of electronics that look better with LEDs attached to them, you still have to select the right colors to make things come to life. You can't just select one general color and expect it to always add more to something just because it's an LED..

Many console manufacturers went out of their way to add LEDs into their accessories and consoles.

This in no way is a bad thing and it is always nice to have light indicators. In the case of our next custom console though, the LEDs just don't add enough to bring things to the forefront. The blue LEDs are fine, but the use of black paint makes them hard to see. I think that this particular design would have been better using a different color of paint.

There are a lot of things that the NES did for the gaming industry. Before Nintendo, game companies would allow anyone and everyone to develop games for their system and while Nintendo took things a bit to far, they did show how to ensure the success of a console.

From that point on, game companies would carefully select which titles they would include on their systems and introduce us to an era where we buy systems mostly for the titles they can offer, not the features they can give. This next one is simple, but it does the NES justice.

24 Lame: Disappointing Light Show

Via: xbox-one-hq.com

Yep, we've reached that point in the list again where we see a case mod that tries to do way too much with LEDs alone. To their credit, they have also included a clear window, something that isn't standard with the Xbox One. In truth, part of the problem with using LEDs in any design is the fact that the space in the Xbox One is limited for modification.

Many artists have chosen to use paint rather than lighting to bring their consoles to life.

It's easy to see why too, given that they are able to do more with the limited amount of space than they ever could with LEDs. For designs like this, I wish that the artist went ahead and painted the console and then incorporated the LEDs into the design.

23 Dope: A Long-Running Franchise

I really do miss what Halo used to be. When it first came out it really shook the fabric of the gaming industry by creating a demand for more in-depth backstories in the fps genre. It wasn't that gamers didn't have these things before, but until the introduction of Halo, it was as if companies forgot how to tell a good story.

With the passage of time though, the franchise began to fall apart and rather then let Bungie go out on their own terms, Microsoft decided to force them into making new games. From that point on (and into today), the franchise has suffered as a result. With that being said, this artist does a good job of paying homage to the iconic title.

22 Lame: Leaving A Lot To Be Desired

Via: consolevariations.com

I want to preface this entry by saying that the artist did as much as could be expected with the theme of: shoes. After all, there isn't a whole lot about shoes that can be translated into electronics.

It would be been interesting to see the web-like design from the shoe itself make its way onto the unit, but maybe it would have seemed a bit too busy. Still, the commitment to a classy cohesive aesthetic is admirable.

There are very few among us that haven't seen a Disney movie or two growing up. They added a realistic quality to a cartoon backdrop and it's no wonder, given the effort that Disney animators put into creating each film. It's hard to believe how old some of the films are given their visual quality.

One of the few real gems of the Kinect 2.0's library was Fantastia Music Evolved, which was developed by Rock Band developers, Harmonix. This simple, but colorful skin would look great sitting under any cabinet.

20 Lame: Nuclear Fallout

Via: SE7ENSINS.com

We've already seen one Fallout-themed console on our list and while I wanted to limit the amount from any given franchise, I couldn't help but place this one on the list for use as a contrast to our previous installment. While I like the general idea of the console itself. I feel like the artist left a lot to be desired here.

The left side of the console is done very well and it adds the right amount of rustic quality to the piece, but I think the artists went a little overboard with the rest of the console. The rust color seems to take away from what detail is there and you are left with something that detracts from the left side of the system instead of helping it.

19 Dope: Mechanized Mayhem

Via: kitguru.net

It's not easy for a company to shift gears so quickly and go into something vastly different from anything they have ever done before, but that's exactly what the ex-Infinity Ward staff did when they formed Respawn Entertainment. When Titanfall was released it was much more than just your standard FPS.

The game fell flat, not because it wasn't optimized well, but largely because it was exclusive (and multiplayer games need a big install base to maintain). That being said, to honor the game's release Microsoft themselves commissioned this wonderful Xbox One custom console.

18 Lame: Missing The Mark

Via: siliconera.com

Picture this, you are asked to design a console based on Final Fantasy XV. You know that it contains many of the same elements found in other Final Fantasy games and you also know that cars play a large part in the story. You might think about adding some elements of those cars within your design, but not too much as to make it look like it came straight from the junkyard.

While most of us would see the above design as car parts overkill, Square Enix and their designers didn't think so. I can't see how anyone could look at this console and think that it looks good. It looks as if the artists just placed random car parts on the top of it and glued them in place.

17 Dope: Do The Dew

Via: 343industries.org

I figured that I would eventually come across something like this in my search for custom consoles and I can honestly say that I am not disappointed. Without Mountain Dew, professional gaming wouldn't be what it is today. They stepped in when other sponsors wouldn't and embraced the culture that was video games.

Regardless of if you are a fan of the Soda or not, you have to appreciate what was created here. They were able to blend the logo with the perfect shade of green and they added to the overall design by providing a custom themed controller as well. I only wish that the Mountain Dew logo lit up when the console turned on like a vending machine.

16 Lame: Careful Etching

Via: gameaddik.com

Engraving is an artistic technique that has stood the test of time and it has lead to the creation of some of the most wonderful pieces of art and structures the world has ever seen. It takes an immense amount of time and patience and the process, when done right, can never be rushed.

That being said, the problem with this design is the fact that it ends up being very basic. And not in a cool and reserved way. There is so much that could have been done here to compliment the symbol found on the front right of the console itself.

15 Dope: Gearing Up For Greatness

Via: twitter.com(SunModZ)

This marvelous custom Xbox One console perfectly captures the ethos of the excellent (and exclusive) Gears of War games. Even a Playstation fanboy can appreciate how wonderfully built this consoel looks. For a custom console, it looks remarkably sturdy, while also being unique and stylish. It's definitely one of the "dopest" units in the entire list. Kudos to SunModZ for the incredible work.

14 Lame: Stencil Station

Via: Pinterest.com

When it comes to console case creation, many stress the importance of selecting the right materials to work with. If you don't select the right base materials, then even the most intricate of designs can come out looking like something very different than what was originally intended.

The artist in this next piece clearly took their time with selecting various materials to give a short of metal look to their console. The lettering is also done really well here, but the image on the left seems as if it was painted on using a stencil. I really wish they would have spray painted on the skull here to keep with the theme.

13 Dope: In Extreme Detail

Via: ubi.com

Assassin's Creed was able to take stealth to a whole new level and while the controls in certain titles can be a little wonky at times, it is always a joy to play. The engine for the most part runs well and your character usually does what you would expect them to do in a given situation.

This unit takes a unique and attention-grabbing art style and marries it to the incredibly unique Assassin's Creed art direction.

12 Lame: Missing Key Elements

Via: tinker-mods.com

There's no doubt that Minecraft has become one of the most played games currently on the market. People are playing it across the globe and while I am not a fan of it myself, I can certainly respect an artist's choice to design their console around it. Customization is never easy and it takes a lot of time and effort to really pull off a world class design.

Sometimes an artist will have a great idea, but there just isn't enough there to say that it is truly great. That is certainly the case with this particular console mod, like many of the weaker entries on this list, this particular mod just looks unfinished.

11 Dope: Placing The Galaxy In Good Hands

Via: digitaltrends.com

There's no telling if the latest film will continue to build on what has already been done, but artists around the world haven't been waiting around and have gone about creating some truly remarkable works of art. None as impressive as this Xbox One case mod featuring a larger than life Groot. Obviously the unit is a bit less practical than the basic design, but if you're going to mod something, you might as well go all out.

10 Lame: Overwatch Nod

Via: deviantart.com(lubinas)

Blizzard had been trying to create an FPS for some time before it introduced the world to Overwatch. True to form, the company junked completed projects due to the fact that they didn't meet quality standards. In a day and age where many companies are out to release unfinished or broken games to cover their expense, Blizzard is still willing to take a loss rather than hurt its consumer base.

Our next artist took elements from the character Junkrat to create their theme, but the finished product looks a bit rushed. Actually, that might be exactly what they were going for given Junkrat's demeanor.
