Look, I love my Switch, don’t get me wrong. That little system is amazing! However, it just cannot compete with the Xbox One or PS4! Not in the slightest! I mean, searching the PlayStation Store on PS4 is like trying to solve a jigsaw puzzle that doesn’t actually have any solution, and the Xbox is, as the kids would say, stupid ugly! And the PS4 is a perfect home for roaches! Who doesn’t want those fun little monsters inhabiting their consoles? Can the Switch house them? I certainly don’t think so.

Look, the PS4 and the Xbox are good systems, but they aren’t perfect, and they certainly have their flaws. And those flaws are what we’re going to be looking at with this article, 15 glaring problems with the Xbox and PlayStation that nobody wants to admit! There’s quite a bit to parse through. I’m not lying about that roaches thing, seriously. However, we will also be looking at 5 mistakes that Sony and Microsoft managed to fix (and Microsoft certainly had a lot of things that needed fixing), we’re not complete pessimists here!

Without any further ado, let’s get right on into it!

19 PS4 Has No Backwards Compatibility

via: imdb.com

Ok so hear me out, a corporate company is greedy! Surprising right? Wait, I have evidence to back it up. Get ready y'all. The Xbox One allows backward compatibility with hundreds of games, with the list of supported titles expanding continually. You know what PlayStation does? Not that. The PlayStation answer is PlayStation Now, a paid service, which lets you stream some games from PS2 and onward. Yay. Sounds great right? Why am I paying to play games I already own?

Do you know how much I love PlayStation All-Stars? Not enough to dig out my PS3, find wherever the heck my Vita was last used, or pay $10 a month for it, so I just never get to play it again. Cool, thanks PlayStation! (I just found out after writing this that PlayStation All-Stars isn’t even offered on PlayStation Now so RIP me.)

18 The Xbox Has No Exclusives (PC)

via: geektyrant.com

Ok before you start yelling, this isn't that 360 generation "they don't have Uncharted! N0 games!" argument, but rather that every exclusive they have is also a PC title. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's good for consumers, it makes owning an Xbox unnecessary.

Why have an Xbox if you can play all their exclusive titles on PC?

The PlayStation and Switch exclusives are just that, exclusives, and are easily some of the most important reasons to buy Nintendo and Sony consoles. While there are a few reasons Microsoft is losing the current console generation in terms of sales, this could certainly be a huge factor.

17 They're Outdated (Yes, Really)

via: ps4home.com

These things, are old. It's something that's unavoidable when dealing with consoles, but these things were essentially just good gaming computers when they came out, not even great ones.

And now it's been five years, they're just going to keep getting older and falling more and more behind the PC competition.

While the Pro and X certainly do help to remedy the situation, these things are not going to be able to stand up much longer and continue to be homes for boundary-pushing AAA titles such as God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2. It's a given at this point, but the release of the PS5 and Xbox… Two are drawing near.

16 Fixed: PlayStation Name Changes

via: charlieintel.com

For the longest time, PlayStation name changes have been one of the most requested changes to PSN by users.

Sure, 69kushgod69 was great when you were eleven, but you're a sophisticated grown-up now. It's time for 420KushLord to arrive.

Well, now it can! Very recently Sony announced that name changes will now be available to players. The first one is free, with the second change costing $10 ($5 for PS Plus members). This new change will be a relief to many who have been waiting to get a new username, and it shows that Sony is listening to consumer feedback and requests.

15 Internal Storage And Game Installs Are Out Of Hand

via: playstation.com

500 Gigabytes might sound like a lot of space, and both the Xbox and PS4 both launched with that much internal storage back in 2013. This is not enough! Let me elaborate. I very rarely buy digitally, almost every game I own is physical.

Explain to me why each of those disc-based games needs an 80-gigabyte install on my system? Why?

The Switch comes with only 32 gigabytes of storage and I haven't had an issue with it yet. If this is going to be the standard for even physical media, 500 gigabytes doesn't even get close to getting the job done.

14 Music Player Integration Is Awful

via: softonic.com

Microsoft is definitely winning in this department, but both the PS4 and Xbox could use a bit of work in music player integration. While the Xbox has a few more choices, the PlayStation only has Spotify and Local File music options. If you're one of the seven people in the world like me that use Google Music, or one of the millions that uses Apple Music, you're out of luck, as you simply cannot use these services while gaming. While it's not a massive issue or anything, these are modern machines that are competing with PCs that can do this task easily, so hopefully, this will be fixed sooner rather than later.

13 PS4 Power And Eject Is Still Silly

via: steam.com

I hate these things.

Do you know how many times I've accidentally ejected a disk trying to just move my cat away from something she wasn't supposed to be on?

Literally, I look at these things and they activate. I hesitate to call them buttons because they aren't deserving of that name. Buttons have to be pressed. These things sense that you have entered the house and they activate. They are way too sensitive and I've lost valuable visual novel progress because I accidentally ejected the disk. The fact that the PlayStation console was released in this state irks me.

12 Fixed (Almost): Crossplay On PS4

via youtube.com

Crossplay seems to be slowly making its way to the PS4 after months of asking from players. While Nintendo and Microsoft were over here holding hands and basically subtweeting Sony, the company stayed firm that the PlayStation Network needs to be a closed ecosystem. However, the current biggest game in the world, Fortnite, is now in open beta to be crossplay compatible between every single system it is currently on, including PlayStation. Say what you want about that game but it is likely one of the main reasons that crossplay is even happening. Hopefully, this testing ground leads to more crossplay opportunities in the future.

11 Still Stupid Expensive

via: polygon.com

These things still cost WAYY too much money. A new 1 terabyte PS4 and PS4 Pro will cost you $299 and $399 respectively, while a new 500 gigabyte Xbox One S and a 1 terabyte One X cost $250 and $500 respectively. These high prices make the barrier for entry into the console space far too high considering these systems will be obsolete in just a few years. The iterative consoles are also just too high of a price for the benefits they provide, which is also dependent on whether you have a 4K television. There's a reason the $300 Switch is selling so well.

10 PS4 Controllers Perish, Xbox Uses Batteries

via: thenewswheel.com

Isn't it weird that Xbox One controllers use batteries? I didn't even know that was a thing until I started writing this article.

The last time I remember changing batteries on a console controller was when my mom and I were ready to sit down for a game of Mario Kart Wii.

Also, have you ever used a PS4 controller? The second you turn it on it perishes. Maybe it's just me, but I'm literally never not charging my PS4 controller. I don't have anything else to say on this point, I'm just annoyed now thinking about it. Sony and Microsoft, fix this.

9 The Xbox Is Kind Of Ugly

via: ign.com

Have y'all ever looked at the Xbox One at all? It really is not cute. The PS4 is definitely the better looking of the two consoles, and actually looks kind of interesting!

The Xbox One looks like a VCR player, while the One X upgrades it to look like a DVD player.

Consoles are usually something that are fun and exciting to display for everyone to look at, but the Xbox is literally just a large black box no matter which model you're looking at. All I know is that my Switch is much more interesting to look at than this thing.

8 Fixed: Xbox's Always Online

via: readersgambit.com

Remember that one time the Xbox One essentially destroyed all momentum it had going for it before it even released? Well, while that was due to a variety of awful little reasons, one of them was that the Xbox One was originally supposed to be an always online console.

How it would work was that some of the Xbox One's most important features would stop working if it didn't have an Internet connection in over 24 hours.

This essentially destroys the console for players in a rural area and just has no reason to be a feature of any console, which, it still isn't, as Xbox backpedaled this immediately due to the huge negative reception it received.

7 Iterative Consoles

via: leafly.com

Have I made it clear in previous entries that I don't like iterative consoles? Because I do not. They're an attempt to bridge the gap of console generations that cost consumers a huge amount of money. With the next console generation likely on its way, there's no reason to invest in a brand new PS4 or Xbox One that can do just a little bit more than your current one can. Ok ok, while my launch PS4 model might sound like it’s screaming while it’s running some of the newer games, it still gets the job done. To me, there’s just no reason that iterative consoles need to exist. And if you think this is just me being bitter because I’m poor, you’re absolutely right!

6 No Xbox VR

via: youtube.com

One definite plus that Sony has over Microsoft in the console area is PlayStation VR. PlayStation VR is used in tandem with the PS4, and is currently the only VR solution for console gamers. Microsoft currently doesn't have any sort of competitor to PS VR. As VR becomes more and more a mainstream feature in the future, Microsoft will be forced to come up with their own version of it, otherwise, they'll fall even further behind Sony in the console wars.

5 PS4 Touchpad Not Used

via: alienwarearena.com

Ok, I love the PS4 touchpad. It seems like it has so many possible uses that could make so many new and unique control schemes. However, in reality, this thing is completely useless. Almost every single PS4 title doesn't use it. However, when it is implemented, it’s almost always in a contrived and inconvenient way. But I believe that is simply because it hasn't found its true use yet. I believe in you, touchpad. Keep going. One day you will find a use that isn't to just be completely shoehorned into a game that doesn't really need to use you.

via: resetera.com

Remember when you had to use an abacus in the 21st century for some reason? That's what it was like browsing the PlayStation Store for some reason, one painful letter at a time. I have no idea why browsing the PlayStation store had the awful scroll wheel for so long, and finding exactly what you were looking for with any specificity was an absolute nightmare.

Because why have things that work properly?

Who up at corporate legitimately thought that anybody would like this idea? At all? And why did it go on for as long as it did? Well, at the very least it's fixed now, after what, 5 years of struggle?

3 Games With Gold Is Eh

via: wccftech.com

The PlayStation Plus free games offerings usually amount to some AAA titles that are a few years old, along with some amazing indie titles. Xbox’s Games with Gold usually does the same, but like, less. Month over month, PlayStation Plus tends to edge out the competitor with more, higher priced games. It’s not necessarily saying that Games with Gold is an awful service or anything, but considering that Microsoft doesn’t even release sales numbers for the Xbox One anymore, Xbox needs to step their game up a bit.

2 Xbox Selection Not As Good

via: playstation.com

Ok, remember how I said that I wasn't gonna say "they don't have Uncharted! N0 games?" Well, I'm now going to say "they don't have Uncharted! N0 games!" When I think of Xbox exclusives the things that come to my mind are Halo, Gears, and even Sea of Thieves. That's really it. When I think of PlayStation I think of Uncharted, The Last of Us, Death Stranding, Ratchet and Clank, Detroit: Become Human, Bloodborne, Horizon, Spiderman. The list goes on. While the Xbox does have some exclusives and are currently in the process of bolstering that library, as of now, it doesn't compete with the PlayStation's list.

1 Fixed: Xbox DRM

via: softpedia.com

Ahhhhh, probably the biggest reason that the PS4 has undeniably eclipsed the Xbox One in popularity. During the Xbox One's original launch plans, the console was set to be online 24/7, and would check your discs to make sure that they were new and had not been used before, effectively ending used games being a thing (GameStop is screaming). This is literally just awful and anti-consumer, and fans obviously agreed, and after the huge backlash, they reversed their decision. This literally sounds like EA making a console. But hey, now they have Gamepass! Things are so weird.
