The Xbox Series X has been out in the wild for almost a year now, but good luck actually spotting one on store shelves as demand continues to outpace supply. And with the ongoing chip shortages looking like it might affect production well into 2023, don't expect that to change anytime soon. But the console itself isn't the only thing that has been missing in action these past couple of months.

Ever since it was first shown off at The Game Awards in 2019, several of the games that were debuted alongside the Xbox Series X, and in the months that followed, were also anticipated to launch with the next-generation Xbox. Most never did though, mainly due to delays caused by the pandemic and work-from-home conditions. What follows are some of the as-yet-unreleased games that were expected to launch within the Xbox Series X launch window.

10 Bright Memory: Infinite

Originally released in early access on Steam in 2019, Bright Memory was one of the few games to make a splash during the May 2020 First Look at Xbox Series X gameplay.

It was especially noteworthy for being developed by a single person, which is remarkable when you factor in its truly next-gen graphics. And although the first episode of the game did indeed launch with the Xbox Series X|S on November 10th, we are still yet to receive the complete package, which has since been retitled Bright Memory: Infinite.

9 Senua's Saga: Hellblade II

Following their acquisition by Microsoft in 2018, Ninja Theory had secretly begun work on the sequel to their critically-acclaimed indie game, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice.

And in what was effectively just a tech demo for the Xbox Series X at the time, Senua's Saga: Hellblade II was shown running on the freshly unveiled next-gen console during the 2019 TGAs. Featuring a mix of live-action footage and highly detailed character models, the footage gave gamers their first taste of what gaming in the next generation would look like. But the game itself is still in active development, so there's no telling how much longer they'll have to wait to play it for themselves.

8 Scorn

Scorn was another game that was shown off at the May 2020 Xbox Series X Gameplay First Look, where it was announced to be an Xbox Series X console exclusive. The first-person survival horror game is being developed by Ebb Software, a Serbian game development studio that was established in 2013.

The game was first unveiled in 2014, captivating the minds of gamers with its otherworldly setting that looks ripped straight out of a Tool music video. No release date was given during the First Look showcase, but considering how long the game had been in development, our false expectations had pegged it for some time within the Xbox Series X launch window.

From the little that could be gleaned from the trailer that was shown during the May 2020 Xbox event, it looked like it would be harkening back to the more simplified gameplay of classic 3D space shooters like Forsaken and Descent. The game was announced with a 2021 release window during the event but is still yet to receive a concrete release date as the year gradually winds to an end.

6 Second Extinction

Second Extinction is a cooperative first-person shooter where humans must fight off mutated dinosaurs in a post-apocalyptic setting.

The live service game was announced at the May 2020 Xbox event, with no set release date. It was subsequently released into early access through Steam in October of 2020, and on Xbox Game Preview and Game Pass in April of 2021, but the game is yet to receive a full release on either platform.

5 Hello Neighbor 2

The survival horror stealth game, Hello Neighbor, is set to receive a sequel on PC and the Xbox Series X|S.

Developed by Russian development studio, Dynamic Pixels, the first game had players sneaking around the house of a suspicious neighbor as they tried to solve a mystery without getting caught. And it looks like the new game would be offering more of the same, at least from what was shown off at the July 2020 Xbox Showcase. The game is due out sometime in 2021.

4 Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2

The long-gestating sequel to the 2004 action RPG, Vampire: The Masquerade, was originally scheduled to release in March of 2020. But after being delayed in late 2019, and once again in late 2020, the game is currently expected to release sometime in 2021.

It was one of the first games shown running on an Xbox Series X at the May 2020 First Look event, with an in-engine trailer that was interspersed with snippets of first-person gameplay reminiscent of the first game.

3 Forza Motorsport

Glimpses of what looked like the next entry in the Forza Motorsport series could be seen in the Xbox Series X debut trailer shown during The Game Awards in 2019. But the game itself, simply titled Forza Motorsport, wasn't unveiled until the July 2020 Xbox Showcase.

From what was shown, the title looks like it would be making full use of next-gen hardware, with ray tracing options and an overall increased level of detail. There is still no concrete release given for the title, but fans of the larger Forza series at least have the forthcoming release of Forza Horizon 5 to tide them over until then.

2 Cyberpunk 2077

During the lead-up to the launch of the Xbox Series X, one of the games expected to put the console through the paces was the highly-anticipated first-person RPG, Cyberpunk 2077. But it quickly became clear that was not to be the case.

The game would eventually launch on the Xbox One in a half-broken state on the 10th of December. And while it is possible to play that version on the Xbox Series X through backward compatibility, players are still waiting for the true next-gen versions to arrive. The roadmap shared earlier in the year by CDPR has the free next-gen upgrade for Xbox Series X pegged for release sometime before 2022.

1 Halo Infinite

After all the backlash (not to mention Craig memes) that followed its unveiling of Halo Infinite during a July 2020 Xbox showcase, Microsoft was forced to delay their flagship Xbox Series X title till sometime in 2021. That additional development time was to be spent polishing what was at the time a game that didn't look particularly next-gen.

Since then, we've had news that the multiplayer portion of the game would be free-to-play, and that the game would be launching without campaign co-op or Forge mode. Thankfully, it was finally given an official release date of December 8th, so here's hoping that it actually manages to hit that date while living up to expectations.
