Backward compatibility is a huge issue for most gamers. Most of us just don’t have the real estate to house an ever-expanding roster of game consoles. All-in-one devices can be a huge space saver in the living room, and it looks like the Xbox Series X/S might just be that device for the current generation.

Thanks to the Xbox’s built-in developer mode, users can install software that’s designed to run on the Universal Windows Platform. Basically, if it’ll run on Windows PC, you can probably get it to work on the Xbox Series X/S. This allows you to install emulation software on the XSX/S and turn your brand new console into a crazy emulation platform.

YouTuber Modern Vintage Gamer just made a video showcasing RetroArch running PS2 games on the Xbox Series S, and it works like a dream. RetroArch is a free, open-source, cross-platform emulator that can let you play almost anything. The current preview build also incorporates PCSX2, a PS2 emulator, and although it requires some effort to get set up, the results are phenomenal.

As you can see in the below video, Metal Gear Solid 2 plays extremely smoothly with minimal slowdown and almost no lost frames. There are some reported texture bugs, but really none that we can see in the short clip here.

Jak & Daxter, on the other hand, has a more noticeable issue with textures, as you can see in the extended shadow that Jak and Daxter both produce.

Other games have the occasional texture issue or artifacting, but God of War and Timesplitters 2 both looked great. Shadow of Colossus had a few slowdowns at times, but considering how the PS2 slowed to a crawl under that game's ambitious graphics, that's really to be expected.

We’d recommend waiting for a more stable build before you start messing around with emulators, but the Xbox Series S might soon turn out to be the cheapest all-in-one emulation solution of the current generation.
