While there are plenty of unraveled mysteries by the game's end, including the likes of Moebius, N, M, the Flame Clocks, and more, there is still plenty that Monolithsoft will leave you guessing over.

Updated on August 5, 2023 by Rebecca Phillips: The launch of Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed answered some of the questions we had after finishing the base game, but, of course, plenty more questions were raised in the process. We've updated this list to reflect the questions still left open even after playing the additional story content.

Spoilers for both the base game and Future Redeemed below.

11 What Happened To Matthew?

Matthew putting his fists together in Future Redeemed

At the end of Future Redeemed, the party, sans Shulk and Rex, begin to establish the City we come to know in the base game, but there's also a heartfelt goodbye between Matthew, his sister, and the rest of the supporting characters. Matthew claims that he'll come home soon, but going by the Founder statues that claim only his descendants made their way back to the City, it's evident that he never returned.

What happened to Matthew after he left? He had children, that's for sure, but what caused him to leave his sister behind forever? It seems out of character for him, as his main motivation in Future Redeemed is to find Na'el again, which makes his disappearance even more of a mystery.

10 Where Is Rex And Mythra's Child?

Rex Photo Xenoblade Chronicles 3

From the image we see at the end of the game, Rex had three children — one with Nia, one with Pyra, and one with Mythra. Mio is Nia's daughter, and we come to know Pyra's daughter, Glimmer, through the Future Redeemed DLC. However, one of Rex's children still remains a mystery.

We never see this mysterious third child other than in the photograph, and they're never mentioned either. Is Rex and Mythra's child in the cycle like their sisters? Did they become a Moebius? It's unclear, and we'll likely never know.

9 Do Noah And Mio Meet Again?

Noah and Mio Exchanging their Flutes in Xenoblade Chronicles 3

The ending of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is a bittersweet one. The cruel cycle of soldiers being born, dying, and being reborn over and over again is finally put to an end, but, as Noah and Mio are originally from different worlds, they're pulled apart from each other as a result of the worlds splitting.

It's implied that the worlds will come together again in the future, but it's unclear how long that will take. In the final scene, Noah hears the familiar sound of Mio's flute playing in the distance, which hints at a possible reunion. It's purposefully ambiguous, leaving it up to you to decide their fates in the end.

8 Who Was Riku's Masterpon?

Taion and Riku Crafting Gems in Xenoblade Chronicles 3

Riku is one of the core members of Xenoblade Chronicles 3. He is a crafty Nopon from Keves who has known Noah, Lanz, and Eunie since the very beginning. He even gives Noah Lucky Seven, which turns out to be the Sword of Origin. Because it just so happens to be the blade that is strong enough to take on Moebius, Noah asks where Riku got it.

All he says is that his Masterpon gave it to him. This Masterpon is never named, so we're still in the dark as to how Riku came across such a powerful blade. There is a brief nod that Riku and Melia share near the end that could imply that she was his Masterpon, but the jury is still out.

7 Why Didn't Z Prevent Interlinking The Moment He Noticed?

The Lanz-Dominant Ouroboros in Xenoblade Chronicles 3

When Ouroboros goes to fight Z at the heart of Origin, the first thing he does in battle is take away the party's ability to Interlink. It is only through reflection of the journeys that led them there that our heroes can break through Z's shackles and transform into Ouroboros once more.

However, if preventing Interlinking was as easy as a snap of his fingers, why didn't he do it earlier in the game before the party built such strong bonds? Surely, that would've put a damper on their adventure and possibly allowed him success in protecting the endless now.

6 What Was The Deal With The Annihilation Events?

At the start of Xenoblade Chronicles 3, we get exposition from Noah about Annihilation events, which are brief explosions that seemingly erase everything in a small radius. We later learn that holding an Interlink for too long causes an Annihilation Event, but that's not the only way they occur.

After the latter half of the game, though, Annihilation Events are rarely brought up. By the end, they are all but forgotten. It's not clear what they were about or what exactly was causing them. Were they a result of the very existence of Aionios?

5 How Were Noah And Mio Still In The Cycle?

Two of the strongest members of Moebius were N and M, who were revealed to be previous incarnations of Noah and Mio. Their souls were essentially pulled from the cycle of rebirth by Z, and they chose to live in the endless now that he created.

However, it begs the question: how did Noah and Mio remain in the cycle? None of the other Moebius in the game had newer versions of them running around. It's also made clear many times, like with Joran, that Moebius who die are never to be reborn.

4 Where Was Klaus?

klaus xenoblade chronicles

Fans of the Xenoblade Chronicles series will recall that Klaus was the guy in the distant past who essentially created the worlds of the first two games with the push of a button. He would later appear in both games in different forms. Because Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is connected to those two games, fans expect to see him.

That said, he never overtly shows his face. While some might've thought he was Z, it's revealed that Z is simply a manifestation of everyone's desire to live in the present and fear of the unknown.

3 How Was Origin Built?

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Origin Alrest

The world of Aionios was created as a result of two alternate realities going on a collision course with each other. As a way of protecting life, Queen Melia and Queen Nia built Origin, a massive sphere that would contain all the memories and souls of every person across those two worlds.

Origin is a spectacular place, being the birthplace of the Ferronises and housing all sorts of defense mechanisms. How were Nia and Melia able to build such a phenomenal structure?

2 Was Aionios Ever Real?

A screenshot from Xenoblade Chronicles 3's ending, showing Noah and the party looking at a sunset over the horizon

When the party rescues Queen Nia, she goes on a massive exposition dump where she explains that the world of Aionios exists in a frozen moment in time. This means that the entire cycle of war, as well as the numerous lives of every person, only took place in the blink of an eye.

Even Taion asks if Aionios is real and if the people living in it are real. As the end of the game shows, it's almost as if Aionios never existed, and the party members go back to their respective worlds. But do the people retain their memories of what happened in Aionios?

1 How Large Is The Gap Between The Previous Games?

Xenoblade-Chronicles-3-Expansion-Pass-Key-art

Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and 2 were revealed to be alternative timelines. However, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 serves as a direct sequel to both. Queen Melia and Queen Nia are not alternative versions of those respective characters; they are those characters that you used in the other games. The big reveal at the end of the game was that Melia had Shulk's Monado from Future Connected and that Poppi showed up to meet with Nia.

However, it's not clear how large the gap is between those games. Nia has a picture of the party from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 aged up, but it's not clear how far removed that event is from the present. While we do meet an older Rex in Future Redeemed, it's even more unclear just how much time passes between the end of Future Redeemed and the beginning of the first game.
