In Yakuza 7, you can get a job doing some pretty strange things.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon is shaping up to be unlike any Yakuza game that’s ever come before. First, the real-time brawling combat is gone and has been replaced by a turn-based system with attacks, defense, items, and even summons. Yes, you can summon aid from people you know via your phone, which in one case, causes lobsters to rain from the sky and attack your opponents.

Now we’re finding out that Yakuza 7 will double down on the RPG elements with a new job system, just like many JRPGs that have come before it.

So far, there are three different jobs that your followers can apply for. First is Fortune Teller, which is essentially the mage class. This job is all about high offense, low defense, and seeing into the future courtesy of a magic crystal ball. And that future foretells pain for your enemies.

Second is the Riot Police job, which is a little weird considering you’re supposed to be an underground criminal organization. As a Riot Policeman, you get increased defense at the cost of offense, although you’ll certainly be able to lay the smackdown on single targets. Think of this as the fighter or knight class.

Finally, there’s the Idol, which is basically the same as the bard. Use the power of music to enchant foes and heal friends with an equal amount of offensive and defensive capabilities. You’ll also get a nifty microphone and a skimpy outfit. Also, this class is restricted to the sole female character in the game (at least, that we know of).

In order to equip a certain job, you’ll need to have a certain amount of “Life Experience,” which is a fancy name for character stats. Each character gains Life Experience for completing quests and performing activities, and if you don’t have the right Life Experience then you can’t apply for the job.

Yakuza 7: Like A Dragon arrives in Japan in the middle of January 2020. A Western release is expected to follow sometime next year.
