The controversial game, YIIK: A Postmodern RPG, is getting updates for 2020. YIIK, pronounced "Y2K", was released in January 2018 on PS4, Steam, and Switch to middling reviews. Since its release, it's had its share of controversies, including allegations of plagiarism as well as its creator making negative comments about the players.

Developers Brian and Andrew Allanson from Ackk Studios posted some updates on Tumblr to shed some light on the new updates without giving out too much information. According to them, "The Steam, Switch, and PS4 versions will be getting at least two more updates in Q1, one of which we hope will fix any remaining major issues with the game as well as provide a few quality of life changes that have been requested."

They go on to say that " we’d also like to say that plans for a YIIK Soundtrack Vinyl Record have moved forward, and you will likely see that next year provided everything goes according to plan." Before thanking everyone who supported the game, the last thing they had to say was, "we’d like to let everyone know the physical of YIIK from Limited Run is still happening, and we hope to have a date pinned down soon. But rest assured, it’s still happening. It will be rad, and be worth the wait!"

YIIK: A Postmodern RPG is set just before the year 2000. The main character, Alex, returns home from his college graduation and stumbles upon a stray cat with a mustache in an abandoned factory. There, he sees a woman getting kidnapped and a bizarre world of supernatural beings and multiple dimensions opens up to him. According to Kotaku.com  the game is based on Japanese role-playing games of the nineties, complete with a retro soundtrack and locations. The combat is turn-based, and Alex has to fighting with household objects like vinyl records, while health is restored by eating slices of pizza found in the trash.

Since its release, YIIK: A Postmodern RPG, has been accused of plagiarizing the novel After Dark by Haruki Murakami. Some of the dialogue from the book was used almost verbatim from the book, but according to Ackk Studios, “YIIK does intentionally contain allusions to After Dark by Haruki Murakami! That book was an influence on the game and we wanted to pay tribute to it.”

Creator Andrew Allanson also complained about many people not liking his game. He said, "my mistake was thinking that video games are art. I wanted to make a game about a guy who’s a piece of shit unlikable character, who by the end of the game has to transform. But too many gamers, when they look at this, when they play a game, they’re so used to having to identify with the character, that if they play a game where the main character is unlikable or has to do some bad stuff, they immediately get triggered by it. So, the thing is, games aren’t art. They’re toys for children and it’s considered in bad form to talk about anything meaningful, or impactful or thought-provoking.”

Considering the love-hate relationship between YIIK: A Postmodern RPG and its player base, the updates are welcome and will hopefully fix some of the gripes many players have with it.
