Yoshi Game Revealed For For Nintendo Switch

Nintendo's E3 2017 Spotlight event has unveiled many new games coming to the Switch over the upcoming year. One of these new games will be bringing a familiar face to the Nintendo Switch. Yoshi the dinosaur is once again abandoning Mario and the Mushroom Kingdom in favor of his own adventures. He is starring in a game called Yoshi, which is due for release in 2018.

Yoshi is set in a world made of cardboard cut-outs. The trailer for Yoshi shows that it is set on a 2D plane made up of 3D objects. This means that Yoshi can interact with elements in the background of the stage. The game currently looks a lot like Super Mario 3D Land, as that game often had dungeon levels with tight tracks that allowed you to go into the foreground/background of the level.

The trailer for Yoshi showed several returning elements from the earlier games, like the Shy Guys, the Pirahna Plants, and Yoshi's ability to throw eggs. Yoshi has beautiful graphics, that make the world seem as it was really constructed out of cardboard and tape.

The Yoshi trailer also showed a second Yoshi taking part in the game. This strongly suggests that the game will have a co-op feature, where two players can each pick a Yoshi to try and complete the stage. This isn't guaranteed, however, as Yoshi's Wooly World allowed you to summon A.I. controlled companions. The inclusion of co-op modes seems to be a growing trend with Nintendo Switch games, due to the portability of the console and the fact that it always has two controllers with it at all times.

This E3 conference has proven that Nintendo is willing to listen to the fans and give them what they want from time to time. The revival of the Metroid franchise and a Pokémon game coming to home consoles is a testament to that. With that being said, do Nintendo fans really need another platform game starring Yoshi?

In the past three years, Nintendo has released Yoshi's New Island for the Nintendo 3DS and Yoshi's Wooly World for both the Wii U & the 3DS. This is to say nothing of the numerous retro Yoshi games that saw a release on the Virtual Console. Yoshi looks like a decent game, but it also looks like a rehash of the other Yoshi titles we have seen in the past. It might be time for Nintendo to shake things up and give another Mario character their own game, with their own lands to explore and enemies to vanquish. We might be more inclined to become excited for a game where you play as Dry Bones or Waluigi than we are with another Yoshi's Island.

Yoshi is due for release on the Nintendo Switch in 2018.
