Only a couple days after Twitter blew up with screenshots of a premature release of the Link's Awakening amiibo, a new Reddit thread has reported an early release of the video game itself.
This past Monday, Redditor u/california_king began a thread titled "[LA] The Gods have blessed me" and posted a photo of him holding what appeared to be a physical copy of the highly anticipated game. Link's Awakening is not expected to released until this Friday, September 20. Fans were quick to react to the photo.
Redditors' replies to the thread have been mixed. Some are curious and have asked u/california_king how and where they received an early copy of the game. In response to one Redditor's query, u/california_king replied, "My friend get whole box extra mis-shipment at place of employment. 24 extra. He sell me. I get for $25."
Some commentators' curiosity has even turned to anger, calling out u/california_king for stealing. One Redditor pointed out how Nintendo could fine a company for releasing a game before the announced launch date.

Others are skeptical, claiming that the picture is doctored or has been faked in some way. One Redditor theorized, "That is a lovely copy of Mario Odyssey that you printed a Link's Awakening liner for and then took for a drive" before pointing out, "Reddiots will upvote anything... It's not even wrapped." In response, u/california_king assured the Redditor it was legitimate, claiming, "Lol it’s the actual game 100%. I didn’t wanna purchase unless I broke the seal and put it in my switch, which I did. Believe it or not this is the real game. Felt so nostalgic when that opening animation of Link ship wrecking started playing!"
Unfortunately, there's no way to confirm whether or not this photo - and the supposed early release of the game - is real. Until then, we'll just have to take u/california_king's word when they say, "The game is amazing. Very very cute. Very nostalgic."
At this time, Nintendo has not commented on the supposed early release of the physical game. Link's Awakening will officially be available beginning this Friday, September 20.
