The Legend of Zelda franchise has been delighting gamers for decades and it has turned out some of the most beloved titles to grace Nintendo consoles. It’s been incredible to see how much the Zelda series has changed and evolved over time, but there’s still a serious reverence towards Ocarina of Time. Many still consider it to be the greatest Legend of Zelda of all time.

There are many reasons to love Ocarina of Time, but something that often gets overlooked is the interesting way in which the game deals with the series’ Great Fairies. Accordingly, here are 10 things you missed about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’s Great Fairy.

10 They Can Be Broken Apart Into Smaller Fairies

Admittedly, the horrible tragedy of Great Fairies being broken apart is reserved for The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. Majora’s Mask and Ocarina of Time are games that are connected though, and the titles make it clear that the Great Fairies in Majora’s Mask are meant to be the same ones for Ocarina of Time.

In this title, the Great Fairies are split into 15 Stray Fairies due to the powers of Majora's Mask. It's an interesting wrinkle to them and shows that they're not completely invincible.

9 The Fairies Are Now Without Wings

The earliest appearances of the Great Fairies in the Legend of Zelda series depict the characters to basically just be giant humanoid versions of fairies, complete with big wings. There’s nothing wrong with this classical look, but it definitely feels derivative of how fairies usually look in works of pop culture.

Ocarina of Time decides to mix things up a little with the look of the Great Fairies. They're still gigantic magical entities, but now they're without the stereotypical wings. They're just able to magically levitate.

8 Ocarina Of Time Marks A Change In Their Tactics

The Great Fairies have been present for the entirety of the Legend of Zelda series, but in the earlier titles all that the Fairies did was restore Link's life, or his magic, when applicable. This is definitely helpful, but it’s hardly a game-changing experience. It’s more like a bonus for crafty players. Ocarina of Time marks a departure for the Fairies and they go above and beyond those perks. Here they actually gift Link with new powers, items, or upgrades, which are much more convenient and powerful.

7 They've Taken A Turn Towards Violence

Hyrule Warriors is an exciting change of pace for the Zelda franchise, but combining the universe with the gameplay of the Dynasty Warriors musou games turned out to be a stroke of genius. The Great Fairies that are featured in the game are primarily modeled after the Fairies from Ocarina of Time. While they render aid as healing support, they also deliver powerful attacks. Additionally, Great Fairies even become bosses in one of the DLC Packs, which turns these friendly characters from Ocarina of Time into deadly threats.

6 They Share A Secret Connection To Zelda

Ocarina of Time has a rich universe that’s present here with such a deep history and lore, but it leaves plenty of details up to the players' imaginations. In order to summon the Great Fairies in Ocarina of Time, Link must play "Zelda's Lullaby" on the ocarina. The fact that this is the song that triggers them seems to imply that they also have a bond with Zelda on a much deeper level. It's possible that the only reason that they exist is as a means to help out Link and are a result of Zelda's subconscious wishes.

5 They Change Locations

The various Legend of Zelda games all feature vast worlds that have a lot of ground to cover. There are some magical entities in the universe that remain in place or are even stuck in certain areas because of the results of some strong curse. It's worth noting that in Ocarina of Time, the Great Fairy of Magic appears in three separate locations. This shows that the Great Fairies are capable of travel and aren’t sealed to one spot. At the least, they seem to be able to be in several locations at the same time.

The various Zelda games all take slightly different approaches to the series' lore and Link's basic abilities. Ocarina of Time, for instance, begins with a grounded version of Link that has pretty standard skills. Magic eventually becomes a major part of Link's arsenal and integral to his success. However, it's not until Link encounters a Great Fairy that this capacity is unlocked within him. It stands to reason that Great Fairies can ignite anyone's latent magical abilities and have the power to trigger such a shift.

3 They're Connected To The Triforce

A central icon that holds the Legend of Zelda series together is the Triforce. It connects Link, Ganon, and Zelda in an important way, but it also has significant effects on the world. It's important to realize that all of the Great Fairy Fountains have the symbol of the Triforce engraved on them. This is meant to show a level of respect towards the powerful Triforce, but also that they serve it, too. It's possible that their role in all of this is meant to be an aid so the right forces can secure the Triforce in the end.

2 They’re Very Trusting

The Great Fairies have immense powers that can really turn someone into a significant danger or bring them back from the brink of death. These Fairies are always jovial in nature and more likely to laugh and have fun than be suspicious of who’s summoned them. There are enough safeguards in check that the Great Fairies have become very trusting. However, it’s this blind loyalty that results in the Great Fairy of Magic being broken down into Stray Fairies in Majora’s Mask. It’s a weakness that they need to be mindful towards.

1 They View Their Skills As A Form Of Blessing

In Ocarina of Time, most players are so excited to encounter the Great Fairies that they only focus on the giant magical beings or the new abilities that they've just granted. The Great Fairy Fountains aren't huge locations, but they have intricate details that shed some light on the characters. The colors of the fountain walls are different depending on what blessing the Great Fairies are going to bestow onto Link. They view this process as a spiritual act that's almost religious in nature. It adds an interesting level of depth to the ideology behind the Great Fairies.
